In a recent interview on Rhema FM’s “The Fresh Start,” hosts Aaron and Chloe sat down with the Kendrick brothers, creators of No.1 hit: War Room. Known for their powerful storytelling and commitment to sharing the gospel, the Kendrick brothers have once again crafted a cinematic experience that delves into themes of faith, family, and discipleship in “The Forge”.
A Story of Transformation and Faith
The Forge follows the journey of 19-year-old Isaiah Wright, a young man at a crossroads. With a father who abandoned the family, Isaiah is left with the guidance of his praying mother, played by the talented Priscilla Shirer. When Isaiah’s mother gives him an ultimatum—find a job or move out—he faces the challenging task of figuring out what kind of man he wants to be.
Throughout the film, viewers witness Isaiah’s struggles and triumphs as he navigates the obstacles of life. By the end of the film, audiences find themselves cheering for Isaiah, as he transforms into a young man on fire for God. The message of the film is clear: the importance of discipleship and the power of the gospel in shaping lives.
The Kendrick Brothers: A Family of Faith
When asked about working together as brothers, Alex Kendrick shared a glimpse into their dynamic, stating, “We are uniquely gifted differently because we need each other.” This sense of collaboration and unity has been a hallmark of their filmmaking journey, which spans over 22 years and includes nine impactful films.
The Kendrick brothers credit much of their success to the strong foundation laid by their father. Stephen Kendrick referenced Deuteronomy 6:5-9 during the interview, emphasizing that “discipleship should begin in the home.” He went on to say, “Our father lived out his faith around us, he modelled repentance when he blew it and would apologise and ask for forgiveness.” This example of authentic faith and humility had a profound impact on the brothers, shaping their passion for discipleship.
Addressing the Needs of a Disconnected Generation
As the interview progressed, Aaron from The Fresh Start queried the Kendrick brothers about their motivation behind The Forge. Stephen Kendrick highlighted a significant concern: “This generation is digitally connected but relationally disconnected.” He pointed out the unique opportunity for the church to step into this void, stating, “We can reach the entire world for Christ if we begin to get back to discipleship.”
This passion for discipleship is a driving force behind The Forge. The film aims to inspire viewers to take up the mantle of mentorship and discipleship, beginning within their own homes and extending to their communities. The Kendrick brothers hope that the movie will ignite a movement of intentional discipleship, where lives are transformed through genuine relationships and the power of the gospel.
A Stronger Film Than Expected
Reflecting on the production of The Forge, the Kendrick brothers expressed their gratitude for the overwhelmingly positive responses from pre-screenings. Alex Kendrick remarked, “The Forge turned out stronger than we expected. The acting is superb.” This acknowledgment of the cast’s exceptional performances further underscores the film’s impact and the strength of its message.
“The Forge” is beautifully shot, well-acted, with a moving soundtrack, and an important message for Christ-followers.
The Forge can be both encouraging and convicting. And it reminds us all that Christ didn’t come just to save us; He came to transform us, so that we in turn can help transform others.
The Forge” is more than just a movie; it’s an experience that touches the soul and stirs the spirit.
