Behind the Mic: Our Staff’s Favourite Christmas Traditions 1

As we approach the Christmas season of 2024, we wanted to share some of our on-air team’s favourite Christmas traditions. These traditions help us keep the true spirit of the season alive, and we hope they inspire you as well.

Aaron from The Fresh Start

“For us, it isn’t Christmas without attending at least one carol event! There’s something about the joy of celebrating with people, the opportunity to sing about our faith so openly, and the comfort of singing songs I’ve known since childhood with my own kids. (And if there’s a fireworks show thrown in, even better!) I’m often the MC at our church’s carols, which is always a lot of fun—getting the crowd excited, laughing, and pointing them to the true message of Christmas.

Growing up, we’d have an annual Santa photo sent out to the extended family. Mum has one for each year of us growing up, even a few as adults. When grandchildren came along, we continued the tradition, and now we even wear matching outfits or colours (yes, we’re one of those families!).

I think my kids are looking far more fashionable than the fluorescent outfits I wore as a child.

Church is an essential part of our Christmas celebrations—whether it’s Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. We love our contemporary church services but also enjoy attending a traditional Anglican service, especially when my wife sings in the choir.

Christmas Eve usually finds me frantically wrapping presents after putting on some carols. Christmas Day is spent relaxing, eating, and spending time with family. We often stretch the celebrations out over several days so we can spend quality time with all of our loved ones.”

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” – Isaiah 9:6

Chloe from The Fresh Start

“I absolutely love Christmas. As soon as the weather starts to warm and the air carries that familiar festive buzz, I can feel the excitement stirring in me—that’s the first sign the season has arrived!

The street I live on turns into a Christmas wonderland with dazzling light displays, all perfectly timed to music. They’re so beautifully designed, you can tell they’ve been carefully planned. Meanwhile, my modest string of lights outside might not compete, but I like to think they send the message: ‘We don’t hate Christmas… at least we tried!’

One of my favourite traditions is piling into the car with the family to explore the neighbourhood’s glowing streets. The kids, dressed in their pyjamas, are always so excited.

I always second-guess whether a late-night adventure is wise, given the mess bedtime will be—but it’s always worth it!

As we drive through the streets of Christmas lights, carols like ‘O Holy Night’ and ‘The First Noel’ fill the car, reminding us of the true reason for the season: Jesus, our Saviour. It’s a simple, joy-filled tradition, and one I look forward to every year.”

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” – Luke 2:14

Laurel from Mornings with Laurel

“I love being surrounded by the joy and celebration of Christmas. A few years ago, I started a new tradition in our house that I’ve absolutely loved. While visiting a department store in New Zealand known for its Christmas displays, I noticed the store had decorations everywhere. Inspired by this, I decided to bring a little bit of Christmas into every room of our home!

We now have decorations scattered throughout the house—in the bathroom, bedrooms, spare room, laundry, kitchen, lounge, and even the deck area. I snuck a few trendy reindeer into my husband’s office and even added a small decoration in my son’s room (and he didn’t mind!).

It’s such a joy to be reminded of the Christmas spirit everywhere you turn. Why not try it too? Let Christmas surprise you, every day!”

“The Lord has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.” – Psalm 126:3

Richelle from Nights with Richelle

“Our family absolutely loves the tradition of attending Carols by Candlelight. It’s that magical time of year when everyone gathers together, singing about Jesus’ birth under the open sky. There’s something special about seeing the flicker of candlelight against the dark night—it reminds us of the hope that Jesus, the light of the world, brings. Even amid the world’s brokenness, there’s joy in the air. We feel united as we glorify God through these beautiful carols, and their biblical meaning is so powerful.

To keep our focus on the real reason we celebrate, our family is working through a wonderful book called 25 Days of Christmas: A Family Devotional to Help You Celebrate Jesus.

Each day, we read a short story, an inspiring Scripture verse, and do a fun family activity. It’s making Christmas meaningful, one day at a time, and we highly recommend it!”

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” – John 1:5

We hope these traditions help inspire you as you celebrate the birth of our Saviour this Christmas season. Whether you’re creating new traditions or continuing old ones, let’s remember to keep Jesus at the heart of our festivities. From all of us here at Rhema FM, we wish you a joy-filled and blessed Christmas!
