This is a note to all my faithful single mamas out there!
Let me introduce myself. I’m a forty-something who has been a single mom for most of my mama life. Originally from Georgia in the US, I’ve called NSW, Australia, home for over 20 years.
My daughter, Audrey, is now 21 years old, and I’ve had the privilege of mentoring other single mothers throughout my life. Now, I get to “put digital pen to paper” and share just how faithful God has been.
With Valentine’s Day coming up, you may be asking yourself:
“What is a mama to do?”
I’m so glad you asked!
Creating Memories with Young Children
If you have young children, there are so many fun ways to show God’s love while creating meaningful traditions. Remember—we are professional memory makers in our homes, and it only takes two years to establish a new tradition.
Here are a few ideas I loved when my daughter was little:
-
Make heart-shaped pancakes for breakfast.
-
Add strawberries (a special treat back then!) and a homemade card with Bible verses reminding her how much God loved her.
-
Create Valentine’s Day cards for classmates—ask your child what encouraging words could be written to each one.
-
Cut out paper hearts, bake heart-shaped cookies, or even make heart-shaped ice cubes.
Incorporating Faith into Valentine’s Day
One tradition we loved was memorising the Shema Prayer (Deuteronomy 6:5–8):
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength…”
I printed it out and kept it on our refrigerator as a daily reminder.
Another year, God placed it on my heart to write “love letters” from Him for the women in our local Aglow group. Inspired by His Princess: Love Letters from the King by Sheri Rose Shepherd, I tied each letter with ribbon and prayed for words of endearment like “Dear One” or “My Beloved.”
At just 8 years old, my daughter helped hand these letters out at registration. It planted in her both a servant’s heart and a firsthand witness of how deeply God’s love touched others.
Raising Spiritually Sensitive Children
Raising spiritually sensitive children is essential today. Scripture reminds us that “the thief comes only to steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10), but God gives us grace and expands our capacity to love and lead our families.
When I was juggling three jobs and full-time school, I often couldn’t afford the “extras.” Even something as small as choosing generic peanut butter reminded me to trust God’s provision. Now, every time I buy the name-brand jar, I remember His faithfulness.
Valentine’s Traditions for Teens
As Audrey grew older, I adapted our traditions to fit her season:
-
Flowers delivered to school
-
A Valentine’s Day card and a homemade breakfast
-
Notes in her lunchbox (yes—even teenagers need them!)
-
Messages written on her banana
-
Matching PJs for the occasion
-
Walks or drives together
-
Attending Bible studies side by side (BSF—Bible Study Fellowship—was wonderful during her HSC years)
Tip: Learn your child’s love language—whether quality time, words of affirmation, gifts, acts of service, or physical touch—and shape your traditions around it.
A Word of Encouragement
As we transition through motherhood, our role shifts: parent → coach → friend. That’s why prayer partners and spiritual community are so important. Don’t isolate yourself—ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to a Christ-centred church and study group.
Watching Audrey blossom into a beautiful woman of God has been my greatest treasure. I can confidently say that God has been with me every Valentine’s Day—always giving me creative, Spirit-inspired ways to create a peaceful, love-filled home.
He will do the same for you!

Final Thoughts
Yes, Valentine’s Day has become commercialised, but that doesn’t mean it has to lose meaning for us. As Christians, we know the greatest love story ever told—God’s love for us through Jesus.
Whether you celebrate with big traditions, small moments, or not at all, let this day be another opportunity to reflect on, share, and live out His faithful love.
Stay encouraged, mamas. God’s got you!

Like so many other things in our society that have been morphed and adopted by commercial interests, we recognise that Valentine’s Day has become commercialised by retailers and all manner of worldly interests. It is just another day and if you choose not to engage with it, that’s totally fine. Having a day on our calendar when people all around us are thinking about and reflecting on love can be a great opportunity for us as Christians because, after all, our God IS love, and we have the greatest love story ever told. We should proclaim God’s love every day and we see this day as another opportunity to highlight, amplify, reflect on and declare God’s love whether to a significant other or to our children or to the strangers we pass every day. Whatever you choose, we hope you are struck once again by how deeply God loves you. May you know God’s love for you in Jesus today.
