Ali and Danny’s Story: A Journey of Love and Faith
As we celebrate Foster Care Week 2024, we had the privilege of sitting down with two remarkable foster carers, Danny and Ali, who shared their heartfelt journey. Their story is one of love, faith, and stepping out in trust when called to care for a young boy, Travis, in need.
1. The Call to Foster Care Can Be Unexpected
Ali and Danny’s journey into foster care wasn’t typical. Ali, a disability support worker, had already been supporting Travis, a young boy in a difficult situation. “He was in a not very good foster home at all. So he was plucked out of there… it was like an emergency,” Ali explains. When they got the call asking if they would take Travis in, the decision was made quickly. “We prayed about it quickly and took a deep breath,” she recalls.
Danny adds that, while the situation was unexpected, it wasn’t entirely out of the blue. “We kind of made a little comment, not thinking about it, basically saying we’d love to be able to take him on and give him a nice, loving home.” Soon enough, God answered that wish.
2. Opening Your Home Comes with Challenges but Incredible Rewards
Bringing Travis into their home meant big changes for their young family. Having already been married for just two years and with four children of their own, the adjustment was significant. “It was a huge deal,” Danny says, but they trusted in God’s guidance.
Ali emphasizes the support they received from family and community. “He’s gone from having no family to now having two sets of grandparents and siblings. He’s so surrounded now by people who love him, and he’s been able to get connected into our church and know Jesus,” she adds.
3. Practical Ways to Support Foster Families
Not everyone can be a full-time foster carer, but there are many ways to support foster families. Ali highlights the importance of respite care, where carers can take a foster child for a weekend to give the foster family a break. “Respite is so crucial,” she explains. Even something as simple as helping with transport to appointments or dropping off a meal can make a big difference.
She also encourages people to connect with foster carers on a personal level: “Just checking in… go for coffee and ask how they’re really doing.”
4. Older Children in Foster Care Need Support Too
Danny and Ali’s experience is somewhat unique, as they took on Travis when he was almost 16. Older children often face more challenges in finding foster homes, but they are just as in need of love and guidance. Danny reflects on how pivotal it was to step into a fatherly role for Travis: “He really needed good support and guidance from a man as he transitioned into becoming a young man.”
Through their church and personal support, Travis has been able to find direction and hope. Danny acknowledges that, without this guidance, Travis might have gone down a very different path. “It’s immeasurable how much that makes you feel like you’re doing the right thing, and you never regret doing the right thing.”
5. Faith and Patience Are Essential in Foster Care
Both Danny and Ali stress that faith has been the cornerstone of their journey. “The biggest thing I’ve learned through it is patience and loving even when you don’t feel like it,” says Danny. For Ali, her relationship with God has been a constant source of strength: “There’s been a lot of times where I’ve struggled… but God’s got me. He really, really does.”
Their foster care journey has also been a powerful experience for their children. Ali believes that opening their home to someone like Travis has given their kids a valuable perspective: “It’s been eye-opening for them to see that not everyone has had the upbringing they’ve had, and it’s given them the opportunity to be Jesus to someone.”
6. Foster Care is an Opportunity to Live Out Your Faith
Danny and Ali see their foster care work as a way to put their faith into action. “There’s the verse in James that talks about helping widows and orphans in their distress,” Ali said. “This is getting in the pits of life and practically doing the work that Jesus has called us to do.”
For them, the experience has been life-changing—not just for Travis, but for their entire family. “I’m just so grateful that we’ve been able to introduce Travis to Jesus,” Ali says.
How Can You Get Involved?
As we celebrate Foster Care Week, it’s a time to consider how we can all play a part. Whether by providing respite care, supporting foster families in practical ways, or even considering becoming a foster carer yourself, every act of love makes a difference. As Danny puts it, “As hard as it is, I’d never take it back. He’s very much a part of our family now.”
