How To Love Winter Again

How To Love Winter Again 1

Winter can be a tough season—not just because of the cold, but because of the way it can make us feel.

The days get shorter, the sky greyer, and for some, it brings a heaviness that’s hard to shake. But even in the quiet and stillness of winter, God is present.

Ecclesiastes 3:1

reminds us,

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”

So what if this winter, instead of dreading the cold, we embraced the slower pace and found beauty in the small, cosy moments?

Our own on-air host Laurel McCulloch from

shares some simple, creative, and heartwarming ways to lean into this season. Whether it’s through a hot drink, a walk in the crisp air, or reconnecting with others, her ideas are

a gentle reminder that

winter, too, is a gift.

Yes, I know… not everybody loves winter. We’d probably prefer to be out and about on the beach! But as they say,

“A change is as good as a holiday.”

Here are some of the reasons to love winter:

  1. Wardrobe Refresh

As you get ready for winter, it’s a great time to go through your wardrobe and let go of those summer clothes you didn’t wear. Pop by your local op shop to donate them—it’s a great way to declutter and do something good for someone else.

  1. Move Your Body

Don’t resign yourself to staying indoors all winter. This is the perfect time for a late afternoon walk. The cool air is refreshing, and it’s a great way to get moving and clear your mind.

  1. Cosy Catch-Ups

Take advantage of the chilly weather and invite over a friend or two you haven’t seen in a while. Catch up over a hot drink and a few goodies from your local café. Simple moments like these go a long way in staying connected.

  1. Dress for the Weather

I’ve heard it said,

“There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing!”

One of the best things you can invest in is a good all-weather waterproof jacket. Pair that with warm, woollen socks, and your toes will thank you!

  1. The Great Sock Evaluation

Winter is the perfect time to assess your sock situation. Are they worn out or mismatched? If so, treat your feet to some new, cosy pairs. Warm feet make all the difference on a chilly morning.

  1. Upgrade Your Hot Drink Game

Why not try something new this winter? One of my favourite treats is hot chocolate made with a mug of steaming milk and chunks of dark chocolate melted in. Add some marshmallows on top and you’re in for a real winter warmer.

  1. Bring Out the Blankets

Now’s the time to dig out your cosiest blankets. Perfect for that afternoon nap, snuggling on the couch, or adding some warmth as you enjoy a movie or your latest read.

  1. Watching & Reading

Remember that list of books, series, or movies you’ve been meaning to catch up on? Now’s your moment! Create your own little viewing corner, make a hot drink, and settle in with your blanket. It’s the little things that bring joy.

  1. Embrace Your Inner Child

Try to approach winter like a child does. Kids aren’t usually seasonally affected—they love snow, they find ice fun, and when they’re stuck inside, they make the most of it. Think: pajamas all day, cushion forts, giggles, and creativity. Be more childlike this season.

No matter how you feel about winter,

there’s beauty to be found in the stillness, the slow pace, and the comfort of warm company.

Let this be a season not just of staying warm—but of making meaningful, joy-filled moments.

Let’s be real—

Winter can feel hard sometimes.

The cold creeps in, the days feel shorter, and for many of us, it’s just a little more difficult to feel motivated or joyful. Maybe you’ve felt a bit flat lately or found it harder to connect with others or even with God. If that’s you—you’re not alone.

But even in the heaviness,

there’s hope.

Seasons come and go, but God stays the same.

Psalm 74:17

reminds us,

“You have set all the boundaries of the earth; You have made summer and winter.”

That means winter isn’t a mistake or something to just push through—it’s part of His design, too.

So maybe this season isn’t about doing more, but about noticing more. The warmth of a blanket. The comfort of a good conversation. The way a hot drink can feel like a little act of care. And most of all

,

the quiet truth that even here, in the middle of winter, God is with you.

Let this be a season where you slow down, draw close to Him, and maybe—just maybe—start to see winter with fresh eyes.
