Sleeping Out to Make a Difference — Join Soul Hub’s 2025 Sleepout for Soul
At Rhema FM, we’re always looking for opportunities to share real stories from our community—especially when those stories inspire compassion and action. That’s why we’re sharing about Sleepout for Soul 2025, a unique event raising much-needed funds for Soul Hub, a local organisation supporting those experiencing homelessness and vulnerability in Newcastle.
We recently spoke on-air with Sue and Luke Prosser, who shared why this cause is so close to their hearts. This year, in the lead-up to the Sleepout, they’re doing something powerful: spending an entire week living on the streets to better understand the realities of those doing it tough.
“It’s a time when we can learn and grow,” Sue said.
“We want to humble ourselves,” added Luke.

What is Sleepout for Soul?
On Friday, 16th May 2025, the Bolton Street Carpark will transform into a space of unity and purpose. People from across Newcastle will roll out sleeping bags or swags, hear stories from the Soul team, enjoy live music, gather around firepits, and raise funds for those in need.

Whether you come alone or as a group, Sleepout is a chance to reflect, connect, and take practical steps toward helping others. All funds raised go directly to Soul Hub, which receives no government funding and relies on community generosity to continue its work.
Why Rhema FM Is Sharing This
We know homelessness can feel like a distant issue—but it’s a growing reality in our own backyard. As a Christian radio station, we believe part of our mission is to shine a light on what matters, to share hope, and to stand with those who are often overlooked.
Jesus said,
“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” – Matthew 25:40
At Rhema FM, we want to be part of conversations and actions that lead to change. Sharing this event is just one way we can live out the call to love, care, and speak life into our region.
Why is Homelessness a Problem in Australia?
According to the 2021 Census, more than 122,000 Australians are homeless. That’s a 5.2% increase since 2016.
The biggest cause of homelessness in Australia is domestic and family violence, followed by:
-
Lack of affordable housing
-
Mental health challenges
-
Financial stress or unemployment
-
Relationship breakdowns
