LISTEN TO 'THE ARTIST SPOTLIGHT'
Wayne Hindson caught up with Ayiesha Woods to chat about all things family including her new E.P. “Family”
What is like being both a church worship leader and a solo artist?
It’s different in that essentially… even before there was the career of Ayiesha Woods and being on stage performing and ministering as Ayiesha Woods, I was a worship leader at my home church. For me, it’s in a way, coming back to what I’d known so well. And I had been comfortable with. So it’s really a joy and I love being able to lead people into the presence of God on a weekly basis. It’s a time that I can actually dive in myself and get into worship outside of the whole performance aspect of it.
As a worship leader, how do you switch off the performance? Because in church worship, it’s actually not about people seeing you. It’s about God using you to bring people to encounter him.
I think that when it’s all said and done in the back of my mind, it’s all ministry. So there’s not the pressure to perform, if you will. There’s more of the responsibility to minister to people and recognise and understand that there’s a mandate. And I’m not there to, you know, appoint people to me. I’m there to point people to Jesus. And the same is true for ministry in Ayiesha Woods songs, you know, and playing engagements and concerts and all of that. It’s all ministry, when it’s all said and done.
As a mom of three boys at the moment, how do you explain the differences that we’re all experienced over the last several months regarding covid-19? How do you have conversations with them, your husband and yourself, and help them to make sense of what’s going on?
Well, to be perfectly honest, I’m trying to figure that out for me. Just maintaining our relationship with the Lord and explaining to them that all things are working together for our good. And through it all, God has a plan. And we are rather intentional about sharing that with our kids and talking about it. Maintaining truth, just asking God to give us balance because they are 8, 6 and almost 4. And so having to remember that their minds are still very much immature, but they’re smart and they’re able to understand certain things. And so we just pray that God will continue to give us balance with it and share truth with them and let them know that in it all, God has a plan for their lives. And God has a plan in the midst of everything that seems to be haywire and chaotic.
Is it wild and crazy, but also beautiful with those boys?
Absolutely. It’s always an adventure. There’s always something going on. Our youngest right now, he is the smallest member of this household, but he is the absolute loudest and currently the most outspoken! It’s quite eventful in our house. And it’s good because it helps to keep us young and on our toes and busy. It’s definitely a joy and I wouldn’t trade it for anything. We are constantly on a learning curve. God is always showing us something new. Most of the time, it’s a lesson that we learnt from my kids. But I love it. We’re looking forward to this fourth boy into the family and just bring something else to it. I don’t know what yet, but I don’t think that it’s going to die down. I think it’s only going to increase.
We are talking family because Ayiesha has a brand new single out called “Family”.
My husband and I started writing it back in 2017 when Hurricane Irma came through the southeast of our country. And we were quarantined, if you will. We were locked in the house. There was debris all around and they were encouraging people to stay in. And we were without power for several days, almost a week. It was our family and we were honing in on just the gifts that God has given. And the song came about at that time. I initially started writing this song to some music that my husband had, and he’d had it for years. And I was like “I got something for that”. He played it back for me and. And just the lyrics started to flow. And then in February of this year, we revisited it and went in the studio and finished it out in March, around spring break time when everyone was on restriction and there were stay at home orders. So I think it was a great time to go back and see what we could come up with, with the song. And it couldn’t be more fitting for these times.
A big thank you toAyiesha for taking the time to chat with us! May God bless you & your family!
